The Senior Minister uttered the dire words at the anniversary of the Volta River Authority. He said :
“Government has had to pay over $500 million annually for power generation capacity it does not need,”
The NDC under John Mahama, superintended over the most scathing and protracted power rationing in the 63 year history of Ghana. For four years we had to suffer 30-50% electricity supply. And guess how they solved it?
With our peak demand for power of 2,700 MW, they managed to purchase almost twice that requirement, resulting in excess capacity of over 2,300 MW.
The awfully painful thing is, they secured these power plants on a “TAKE OR PAY” basis and that extra, redundant, not needed capacity costs us over $500 million a year or $41.7 million a month.
Take or pay simply means whether we need or use the power or not, we will pay.
For example, you own a commercial bus that runs between Kumasi and Accra every day.
The total amount of petrol you need for the return trip every day is AT MOST 10 gallons at 200 Cedis. However your manager goes to sign an agreement with a petrol supplier that, you will pay for 20 gallons at 400 Cedis every day, whether you need the 10 extra gallons or not.
So every single day, you are throwing away 200 Cedis because you are paying for the petrol YOU DO NOT NEED.
Ladies and gentlemen, that is what the INCOMPETENT NDC Govt has led us into.
I have read that the Govt has tried renegotiating some of these malicious and wicked deals but it is not that easy.
The Senior Minister has called on VRA to find ways of exporting some of these excess electricity we are wasting to neighbouring countries and I think it is even too late in coming.
If we have to give it to our neighbours at half price even ( because I am told that to make it worse, the cost the NDC negotiated is one of the highest in the sub-region) it is better than throwing a whopping 500 million Dollars away every year. At half price we will save $250 million a year or 121 million Cedis a month.
*FREE SHS in 2019, cost us 1.7 Billion Cedis in total, & that same year, we threw away 2.9 Billion Cedis on NDCs unused electricity
* A 400 bed capacity hospital to be built in Tema is to cost $97 million in total. The $500 million can thus build FIVE every year.
*307 Ambulances for every constituency plus extra, cost us $41m ($133,000 each) last year. In ONE SINGLE MONTH of last year we threw away more than that ($41.7m) on NDCs wasted electricity
*NABCO which employs 97,000 hitherto frustrated, unemployed graduates, had 840 Million Cedis spent on it as at last year. This is equal to only 4 months of the payment of unused electricity as arranged by NDC.
*If you have the time and strong heart to, please do your calculations on what has been spent on Planting for Food and Jobs, 1 Village 1 Dam in the North, etc and compare with how much we are throwing away on the NDCs power sector arrangements and you will weep.
And then also give a thought to the BILLIONS of Dollars spent on the financial sector clean up, and then clap for Nana Addo and the NPP Govt. Ask yourselves if these horrible things had not happened under Atta Mills and John Mahama, where would we have found ourselves today under Nana Addo. Far better off than we are even today.,
Fellow Ghanaians, this is the NDC, led by the same John Mahama, that wants to come back to power again.
So understand me and agree with me when I always say, voting for NPP (and voting against NDC) is a straightforward ACT OF PATRIOTISM.
Love your country Ghana. Vote Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia!!!
